January

Lawrence, short of money and suffering from depression, spends more and more of his time in camp (now renamed RAF Mount Batten). His attempts to raise money by selling the land he owns at Pole Hill to Epping Forest meet with repeated delays.

April

The Biscuit is finally seaworthy, and Lawrence is able to spend time motor-boating on Plymouth Sound. He gains the same kind of satisfaction from driving a speed-boat as he does from riding his Brough Superior motor-cycle.

September

The sale of Pole Hill is finally completed, clearing Lawrence's overdraft.

November

Progress has been slow on the Odyssey translation. Now, in response to appeals from Bruce Rogers, Lawrence begins to spend more time on it.
